Zara Hamilton leads an apparently charmed life as a human rights lawyer in London – but she is haunted by questions about her past. Why did her mother disappear? What made her college sweetheart, the Maharaja of Trivikrampur, abandon her? Why did her husband renege on a plan to return to her native India? And why has she avoided visiting her much-loved family home in Qila, Trivikrampur? After ten years as a Muslim in Britain, bereft of a homeland, Zara finally seeks the answers. When she returns to Qila, her world is shatteringly different, her aristocratic family mired in complications and far-right politics on the rise. Amid the unrest of a changing nation, Zara seeks the key to her mother's secret as contemporary resentments clash with a harmonious past.

A Restless Wind piques the reader’s interest from the very beginning with fine details and a strong and engaging protagonist.” The Deccan Herald

“A fascinating emotional narrative of an expatriate, A Restless Wind intertwines the old with the new in modern India.” Muneeza Shamsie, Newsline (Pakistan)

“When India Exotic meets India Embattled a great new transcontinental heroine is born. Husain has put the characters together with great care. But it is Zara who is the novel’s anchor and her confusion over her identity propels the plot.” Kaveree Bamzai, India Today

“One intriguing trait of Husain’s narration is its delicately filigreed details. Her descriptions are graphic, colourful and semiotically nuanced. The semiotized narrative brings home to the reader the contrasted cultural set-ups, or, in phenomenological terms, the conflicting ‘lifeworlds’ that the different characters in the novel inhabit.” Arnab Bhattacharya, The Telegraph, India

There are many that leave their native lands for better opportunities in other countries or for a variety of reasons and the life of an expatriate isn't always as adventurous and glamorous as some may believe. It is often filled with solitude, loneliness, and confusion. This can be a heartbreaking surprise for some who aren't prepared for this and author Shahrukh Husain has written a wonderful story about just such a journey in her "A Restless Wind".

The story of Zara Hamilton, a human rights lawyer in London who should be quite happy and content, yet isn't. She is from a place called Qila, Trivikrampur, which is presumably in India, and has lived in Britain for ten years. Over the course of that time, she has found success but has continued to question much about her past, such as the disappearance of her mother and why her love in college abandoned her. Finally, the questions pile upon her enough that she does return home and finds things so much different than she expected. Her family has changed, politics are incredibly complicated and Zara finally decides to get to the bottom of what happened to her mother so many years ago.

I found this to be a very well written story about a woman who is haunted by much that she doesn't understand. She has all of the material things of life laid at her feet and realizes that this is not what is going to bring her peace, so sets off to find just that. A well written story that was touching and very intriguing. Recommended.

A Restless Wind Shahrukh Husain 9781515075691 Books Reviews

A Restless Wind is a poignant, moving and provocative tale about searching for opportunities and a new life elsewhere, with the added mysterious twist about reflection and unresolved matters in the past. The clever interweave of these issues is what separates this from similar books and creates a strong link with the reader, it did with me anyway, and once absorbed by plot and character I did not want to put it down. I previously hadn’t heard of Shahrukh Husain but I’ll be working my way through her back catalogue of books. Real excellence shining through from contemporary London and mysterious Pakistan.
I was torn whether or not I wanted to read
this book. The book was recommended to me from
my book club remarking "political story of India and
it's refugees". While I expected an audio-biography
with drab detail in a minimal fiction format, I was grossly
mistaken! The story is about surviving persecution
and one woman's struggle with her identity after most
of her family had perished in unspeakable ways due to the
state of affairs and politics in Maharaja of Trivikrampur, India.

A fictional story that readers will be struck by the detailed description
and be able to relate the information back to any culture,
any real world current events and government scrutiny.
Forging for herself Zara had no home land to speak of and had trouble assimilating
into the United Kingdom Society because of her haunted past
and not knowing backgrounds of her extended family just to carry
on everyday conversation.
As an educated women having studied and passed the requirements
for being a lawyer in India, once settled in the UK her skills would
transfer over with some difficulty but alas it is said she secured
employment and worked in the same place for ten years. After that time, her adoptive family, aristocratic encouraged a move back to India to find out the truth of her bloodline and history.

The flow of the story goes fast rich in the flashbacks of her life in Maharaja (bad part of the city) and Qila, Trivikrampur a better set of experiences and memories.
and then how it relates to a client's need for survival which Sara represents her.
My perception was flawed because I didn't think
I would enjoy many layers of the plot and background of Muslim and India.
Again I was mistaken and glad I let my heart open the tragedies women
face daily with little hope for survival or allot of hope and willpower to ask for help
depending on a given situation and person. Let me thank the author
for sharing what I believe to be based off of many society truths.
Bless those who need the courage to write books like these and aid in reversal
of ignorance, bigotry, and political and religious intolerance.
Life of an expatriate in a new land can be hard and tiresome, yet when one leaves at her own discretion to further pursue better life opportunities one would think life would be quite happy and satisfied. For Zara Hamilton, life was expected to be a happier change in London for this Human Rights Lawyer having a having found success, yet the overwhelming feeling of distress, does not allow for a happy feeling. Zara however, find her thoughts lingering to her past where in, her mother had disappeared and the love of her life had abandoned her. The weight of the concern is too much for her to bear while in London, so Zara ventures back to her native land of Qila Trivikrampur to discover the truths behind her questions.

Shahrukh Husain’s Restless Winds, delivers a truly inspiring story; one that so many in this great world of ours could greatly appreciate and relate too. This story was both touching and inspirational, a high recommend for the questioning soul.
